I really can’t express how much I loved this dark and twisty novel. Despite that, much of the plotting was directly related to building and tearing apart relationships, facing harsh truths, introspection, emotional honesty, and a bit of humor–well balanced overall. Black market dealings, political intrigue, betrayal of power, gruesome torture–there are several trigger warnings as this book does tend to get more horrifying than your traditional YA. The world building in this novel was wonderful. Both Nita and Kovit are the anti-heroes you can’t help but love even as they do really terrible, messed up stuff.

Readers discover much more of his backstory and really what made him the sadistic monster Nita has come to know and care for.

The rocky friendship between Nita and Kovit continues to develop as these two supernatural characters struggle to survive. The second installment in The Market of Monsters trilogy by Rebecca Schaeffer, this novel definitely lived up to the darkness, humor, and chaos I expected after Not Even Bones. Now caught in a game of kill or be killed, Nita will do whatever it takes to win. But doing that is harder than Nita thought it would be, even with Kovit by her side. And the best way to start building her reputation? Take her revenge on the person who sold Nita to her kidnappers. Nita must make herself so feared that no one would ever dare come after her again. There’s only one way to keep herself safe.

But with a video of her ability to self-heal all over the dark web, Nita knows she’s still a prime target on the black market. After escaping her kidnappers and destroying the black market where she was held captive, all Nita wants is to find a way to live her life without looking over her shoulder.
